Anthropological Visit

I had a devil of a time finding the opening hours of the big, famous museum in downtown Mexico City that houses the Aztec calendar because I kept searching for an "Archeological" museum. Turns out this baby is an Anthropological museum -- this stuff is still happening. Not only is the Museo Nacional de Antropologia HUGE inside, it has treasures (or I should say, copies of treasures) tucked in a jungle-like park surrounding it. It is easy to forget that you are standing just next to Reforma, the DF's main boulevard.

The native cultures -- their myths, their rituals, and even their languages are still very active in Mexico today. Much was assimilated into the local Catholicism and the Spanish language. What I love about the photo above was not so much the Christian mixed with the pagan in their altar setup, but the ofrenda (offering) that they've brought to their worship -- bottom leftish middle is a dead crow in a shopping bag. Neither Jesus nor his momma want your dead birds.
There is a marshland set up in the central courtyard full of wildlife.
Little did I know, the ancient indiginous people here in the tropics hunted mammoths. I'm not kidding.
Finally, the Aztec calendar -- very, very big. Just like the rest of the museum.

  1. It must be so cool to be surrounded by so much culture and history! I second the notion on the "offering" :)
